GLOBAL RECYCLED STANDARD (GRS)
Why GRS?
The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) monitors and verifies recycled material content in final products while ensuring compliance with strict manufacturing, social, and environmental requirements. It provides a framework for voluntary, third-party certification of:
- Recycled content
- Chain of custody
- Social and environmental practices
- Chemical restrictions
What is GRS?
GRS applies to all companies that produce or sell GRS-certified products, covering processing, production, packaging, labeling, and distribution for products containing a minimum of 20% recycled material.
- Material collection and concentration processes don’t require GRS certification but must declare compliance with the standard’s objectives and may be randomly audited.
- GRS certification is not limited to textile products; it applies to a wide variety of product categories.
Benefits of GRS
- Recycled Material Verification: Ensures materials meet the ISO definition of “recycled” and accepts both pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content.
- Responsible Production: Sites must comply with stringent social and environmental criteria while prohibiting the use of harmful chemicals.
- Chain of Custody: Protects the identity of recycled content from raw material to the final product.
Purpose of GRS
- Trusted Certification: Professional, third-party certification ensures compliance at every stage of the supply chain.
- Secure Communication: Certified products can display the GRS logo to communicate compliance confidently.
- Stakeholder Engagement: GRS is governed by contributions from manufacturers, suppliers, brands, and retailers worldwide, ensuring its relevance and reliability.
